I help older adults feel confident with technology

It was 2010. I was working as a community education coordinator at Limerick City Council when I noticed something that stuck with me. Older adults weren't avoiding technology—they were eager to learn it. But the resources available? They were written by tech people, for tech people. Jargon everywhere. Steps that skipped the obvious things. It's no wonder people felt lost.

I started spending my lunch breaks at the local library helping residents navigate their new smartphones. One woman just wanted to see her grandchildren's faces on a video call. Another wanted to send a simple text without accidentally deleting messages. These weren't technical problems—they were communication problems, and they mattered deeply.

That's when I realized there wasn't a gap in technology. There was a gap in how we teach it. So I went back to university, completed my Bachelor's in Adult Education from University of Limerick, and spent the next 14 years building a different approach. One that starts with "What do you actually want to do?" instead of "Here's what a smartphone is."

Today at theantisocialindex Limited, I get to do this at scale. But honestly? The best part hasn't changed. It's that moment when someone sends their first WhatsApp video call to a grandchild. That's the real success.
